For this second album Metronomy matured into a proper, full-blown pop group, shaping their scrappy electro-rock tendencies into hook-laden mini-anthems. Once in full swing 'The End Of You Too' has to be the least in-tune pop song you'll ever fall in love with. By all rights it should be a real car pile-up of a song, but somehow it makes a virtue out of its own gleeful ineptitude. At least as good - and as wonky sounding - 'My Heart Rate Rapid' is another crossover dancefloor monster, resplendent with multi-tracked falsetto that'd make Sparks wince. It really is a joy to behold. More of the same can be heard in the wayward synths of tracks like 'Holiday', but Metronomy's brand of pop is a many-headed hydra: 'On The Motorway' and 'Back On The Motorway' take to the krautrock autobahn, displacing the iciness of the source material with fun, flamboyant disco. In addition to being a heck of a lot of fun Nights Out never feels flimsy or throwaway, and however lo-fi or whimsical the production can seem, more often than not there's an undercurrent of sincerity elevating the music beyond frivolousness.
